My Little Doll

Favorite Things two days in a row? Ding ding ding, you've hit the jackpot.
For those of you who don't know me, I have a two and a half year old little boy. When I first found out I was having a little man on that magical 20 week ultrasound, I didn't know what to think. Sure, I loved the idea of playing with a rough and tumble little boy, digging outside in the dirt. But how would I dress him?! Let's face it, boy clothes sometimes just aren't as FUN as sparkly pink and purple girls clothes. It took me awhile  to figure it out, but now I think I have one of the cutest dressed little men in the central Nebraska area (humble brag). I'd like to highlight one of my favorite designers:
Wes and Willy

I have a slight preoccupation with dressing Jake in "seasonal" clothing- he has t-shirts for every major US holiday. I love to find really cute Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving shirts...and the motherlode of all holidays, Christmas. Enter Wes and Willy, a fabulous BOYS ONLY clothing designer from my beloved Homaha. Check out these adorable shirts:

Wes and Willy can be found at many online retailers, local favorite Von Maur, and the fabulous D. Diff boutique in North Platte (post about that coming soon!). If you have a little boy, do yourself a favor and check out this adorable line of clothes.

Sweatpant leggings! Who knew?!

In keeping with Julie's theme, I am adding one of my NEWEST FAVORITE THINGS!

My good friends know my mantra: (stolen from the show, Project Runway).

"It's a slippery slope into sweatpants and a minivan".

Now I am no "real housewife".  But I AM a firm believer  that just because you're a wife and mother, does not mean you have permission to turn into Honey Boo Boo's mom.

No.... You do not have to be the high maintenance freak I am.  However, some self dignity is a good thing.

Building on my mantra, I will say that I am a big fan of great fitting jeans, funky leggings, and killer skirts.

The other day, I am perusing the local boutique when I find a pair of leggings that look SUPER comfy.  So I decide to try these super sweet, chocolate colored leggings on.

"Whaty what whaty what?!?!", I say.

"These suckers feel like SWEATPANTS!!!  But they look like 'BUTTA'!  GENIUS!"

Introducing:  K Bell fleece lined leggings!

The sweatpants designed for wanna be real housewives for me!  Comfort AND style.  The perfect gift for the perfect woman in your life!

It's Julie again, back again with another one of my Favorite Things. It's not a food item (surprise!) but it's a discovery I made a few years ago. It's a skincare brush called the Clarisonic.
I don't have five of them, just one

The Clarisonic is a sonic face cleaner that feels like a little microdermabrasion every time you wash your face. You splash some water on your face, put your cleanser on and then use the Clarisonic. The brush oscillates something like 300 times a second (wha?!) and leaves you with a very clean feeling. I'm not gonna lie, the first few times I used it I felt like a took a sandblaster to my face. But after that, my face felt smooth as butter. My pore sized reduced and my face just felt amazing. Now if I don't Clarisonic by 9 AM in the morning I start getting a little twitchy.
"Must...clean...face...NOW!"

Recently Clarisonic came out with a brush for the feet. It sounds amazing and it is on my holiday wish list.

Thanks for reading another one of my Favorite Things posts!

Ahoy Hoy!

Hello everyone! Caroline has graciously invited me to be part of her fabulous blog because a) I'm too lazy to start my own and b)I love cows AND couture too! And I love my dear friend Caroline also. She has made Central Nebraska feel like home to me.
Freezing our buns off at the charity shoot
What cemented the friendship between us? Well, many things. But I was say the one thing we have in common is love of FOOD. Caroline and I can eat like two long haul semi drivers at a late night buffet. We discovered a mutual love of club sandwiches early in our friendship. But the one thing that has really brought together:

THE NOTHING BUNDT CAKE
I discovered these tasty little treasures a couple of years ago when they opened a bakery in my hometown of Omaha. At first, I was like, "there's no way this place will make it! JUST bundt cakes?! NOTHING bundt cakes?!?"
Then I tried a white white chocolate. Oh my.
The cake is very moist (ew I hate that word) and the cream cheese frosting is absolutely decadent. They have many flavors such as lemon (Caroline's fave), chocolate chocolate chip, red velvet, marble (my favorite). And look how cute they decorate them for special occasions:

Anytime I'm in Omaha (which is quite often...can't take the city outta the girl!), I text Caroline and see what she wants. Usually she orders a few bundtlets and I'm more than happy to pick them up. Then we arrange a pickup/drop off, sorta like a drug deal, more of like a bundt deal. After that we usually lament about how delicious the cakes were and how we should open a franchise in central Nebraska (yeah right). BUT they did just open a location in Lincoln, which means bundt deliciousness is only 80 miles away. Two points for central Nebraska!
As part of my contribution to this blog, I'd love to share with you some of my favorite things. I live for Oprah's Favorite Things at the end of every year and quite often think, "hmm I have quite a few favorite things of my own!" So my first favorite thing...Nothing Bundt Cakes!

How my 3 year old is like a dictator

My son is 3. He is adorable, if I do say so myself. He's smart and funny and extremely lovable. But... He is also not unlike a dictator.

Here are 10 reasons my son is like a dictator.

1. It's his way or he will make your life hell.

2. He utilizes tantrums like water torture to your soul.

3. He has concrete, ludicrous, thinking that makes sense only to him.

4. He thinks the world should be his tiny kingdom.

5. He believes that if he yells louder, you will do what he wants.

6. He enslaves those around him by making unrelenting demands.

7. He refuses to share ANYTHING EVER, so he hoards everything.

8. His propaganda is based on simple, barely mastered concepts.

9. Hitting and other forms of physical punishment are first and only solutions to problems.

10. His tantrums and other outrageous behavior too often works, despite our collective intelligence.

St. Patrick's Day

Aw, St. Patrick's Day!  That time honored tradition of honoring our Irish roots by drinking green beer, eating corned beef and cabbage, and dancing the Irish Two Step.

I'm German.  Almost 100% Kraut.  Beer makes me bloated.  I can't dance.  Corned beef and cabbage are the foods of fat and happy Kings, though, and I will be fat and happy too cause I love 'em both.

Despite the fact that I am not Irish in the least, I am Lutheran.  Therefore, I do believe Saint Patrick would have been cool with me.

Growing up, though, St. Patrick's Day scared me.  I still remember those years I forgot to wear green.  I would walk around with my head hung down in shame and swear to the mean boy sitting next to me that I was wearing green underwear.   And I wasn't even that afraid of getting pinched.  It was the whole, "I am a social idiot today".  "I can't even get it together long enough to even put on a stupid green shamrock pin."  The walk of shame was an all day ordeal.

Today I am wearing green.  I even have on these sweet, glittery shamrock earrings from Claire's.  And you can bet your bippy that both of my children are wearing green.  No child of mine will endure the St. Patrick's Day Walk of Shame.  That will be my legacy.

The best thing about St. Patrick's Day as an adult is the fact that you are allowed to act like an idiot for no other reason than the fact that the Irish know how to party and they want us all to join in on the fun. And it's a great excuse to spend money at Party City, or the City of Doom as I like to call it.  That's because of the ridiculously loud and horrible music and the small, scary aisles covered in cheap, plastic crap.

I do hope that everyone, no matter their background or religious beliefs, will take time today to thank the Irish for making such a cool day filled with the magic of leprechauns, pots of gold, and rainbows the size of Ireland itself.

Tonight, my friends, me and my family are headed down the road to our area's new pizza joint.  Once there, we will delight in dining on Reuben Pizza and taking in the sights and sounds of small town life.  I might even risk the bloat and have a green beer, because St. Patrick's Day only comes once a year and, after all, I AM wearing green.

Thursdays

Thursdays are my favorite day of the week.  It's not yet Friday, but the anticipation of Friday is there.  The greater part of the work week is behind me.  The promise of the weekend and time with friends and family is fast approaching.

This Thursday I am reading, "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers" by Debbie Ford.  As I am reading, it strikes me that I started the book on Sunday and yet today the words have even more light and meaning.  My mindset is lighter and more focused on possibility, which makes the words jump.  It never ceases to amaze me how much mindset really does determine experience.

I have some really cool excerpts to share from the book, but first I have to crack some jokes because that is just who I am.  The other day I was feeling pretty crabby and the thought struck me, "Why doesn't someone come up with a brain thermostat?".  I mean really, how much money would that make a person? You're sitting around feeling crabby because you didn't sleep very well and your iPhone screen just shattered (true story), and you think, "well this crabby mood is just unacceptable", so you open your brain and turn the thermostat from crabby to happy!  Just think how much that invention would save on medical bills, prescription drugs, illegal drugs... well you get the point.  Too easy you say?  Probably...damn it!

Instead of trying to change it or turn up the thermostat so to speak, Debbie Ford writes about embracing the crabbiness, or the "shadow" side of us.  Because she says, "We can't have the full experience of the light without knowing the dark".  Debbie states that doing shadow work and embracing our whole self ends our suffering.

I could go on an on quoting Debbie's book, but I think it's better if you hear it from her.  From my perspective and experience, though, I can tell you that I find Debbie's "take" very true.  I still have a lot of shadow to embrace and I will always be a work in progress.  At the same time, the shadow I have embraced has served me well.  The side to me that is loud and gregarious and irreverent, when embraced, is a gift of humor and "refreshing honesty" to those who are open.  Those who do not choose to view my shadow as a gift judge it as "attention -seeking and obnoxious" and secretly wonder why in the hell I would put myself out there like that for the whole world to see.

But my truth is my light AND my shadow and when combined are ME.  And let me tell you, folks... I am having a hell of a lot more fun in my life than those who are choosing to hide in fear and judgement.  And with that being said, judge it without judgement and live your life as only you can.
